Three Things You Can Do To Tune Up Your Hiring
How much money is your organization losing with that critical position vacant? If it’s a revenue generating role, how much revenue aren’t you capturing? If it’s a new role, how long will it be before your new idea can become a reality? If you aren’t satisfied with the answer, you should consider doing these three things to tune-up your hiring process and practices.
Is my job attractive? Really, take a second, remove the tinted lenses and be honest with yourself. Is this job one you would want your child or significant other to have? Think about the entire package - job design, requirements, benefits and compensation, work location, available technology/tools, company culture and team culture. Also consider how this job stacks up against a similar role at your competitor. If you don’t love this job, then why would anyone else?
Does my hiring process do what it was designed to do? At the end of the day, every organization has a hiring process, and some are better than others at hiring the right person for the job. The best hiring processes identify good candidates early on and move them effectively and efficiently through to hire. Many times, the best hire is someone who isn’t going to apply for a new role but because they know someone or were approached, will consider the opportunity. Your process should cater to these folks by ensuring it’s optimized for them.
Get better at interviewing and selecting candidates. Many have seen the metric out there that says, “… the predictive ability of an interview is no better than a flip of a coin.” Regardless of the actual metric, the better hiring managers are at interviewing, the better they’ll be at selecting optimal candidates. Ensure they are using the most valid interviewing style (structured behavioral based interviews), are continually trained on how to administer them and start holding managers accountable for their decisions. Create a metric, make it part of their review/feedback-cycles and provide ongoing coaching.
